AI tools have become an inevitable part of our daily lives, including in recruitment, where we use AI tools to streamline our services and procedures.

Over the last number of years, as free AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT became more prevalent, we – like other recruitment agencies and employers – have seen a significant rise in the number of AI-doctored CVs being submitted by job seekers. At times, this can be a hindrance to the hiring process, especially when AI has over-enhanced a CV to the point of exaggerating someone’s experience or skills.

At Solas IT, we believe that, when used correctly, AI can be an asset to job seekers. From refining your CV to preparing for interviews, tools like ChatGPT and AI-powered job platforms can be incredibly useful.

If you are planning to use AI to enhance your job search, here’s how to do it correctly, professionally, and safely.

Do: Use AI to Structure and Refine Your CV

AI is excellent for:

  • Improving clarity and grammar
  • Restructuring your CV for better flow
  • Turning bullet points into impact statements
  • Tailoring your CV toward a specific job description

Don’t: Fabricate

Don’t use AI to fabricate experience or skills that you don’t have. It is not appropriate for:

  • Inventing experience
  • Exaggerating project scope
  • Claiming exposure to technologies you haven’t used

In Ireland’s tight-knit tech market, credibility matters. Hiring managers will probe deeply in interviews, particularly for contract roles or senior positions.

Best practice: Feed AI accurate information about your real experience and ask it to help you articulate the impact more clearly.

Don’t: Share Confidential Information

This may seem obvious, but sharing confidential information (your own or a company’s) with an AI content creation tool is not recommended. Unfortunately, it is also easy to do. So caution is recommended when pasting your CV, project details, etc., into any AI tool. In particular, avoid sharing:

  • Client names (particularly in contracting roles)
  • Confidential project details
  • Proprietary code snippets
  • Sensitive architecture diagrams
  • Security processes

Best practice:

Even if a tool feels private, you should treat AI platforms like public environments. Instead:

  • Generalise project descriptions
  • Focus on outcomes (e.g., “Improved API response time by 30%”)
  • Remove commercially sensitive identifiers

If you work in cybersecurity, fintech, healthcare, or government projects, extra caution is essential.

Do: Optimise for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

Many Irish employers and recruitment agencies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). This software tool automates and manages the recruitment process by acting as a centralised database from which recruiters can filter CVs based on details such as skills or sector experience.

Use AI to help you:

  • Mirror keywords from the job description
  • Align technical stacks
  • Reframe responsibilities to match role requirements

Don’t: Keyword Stuff

  • Avoid keyword stuffing; one or two mentions of a key term is plenty
  • Also, don’t add technologies you barely know just because they are mentioned in a job description.

Whether they use an ATS or not, recruiters can tell when a CV feels artificially inflated.

Do: Use AI for Interview Preparation

Interview preparation is an area where AI can be incredibly helpful. Use it to:

  • Generate mock technical interview questions
  • Practice behavioural responses
  • Simulate scenario-based discussions
  • Prepare contract rate justification

Example prompt:  “Generate senior-level interview questions for a Cloud DevOps Engineer role in Ireland.”

Don’t: Become Robotic

Remember that employers want to hire a human, not a robot. By all means, use AI to help prepare and practice, but focus on sounding natural. Some tips for avoiding becoming robotic:

  • Don’t memorise AI-generated answers
  • Adapt responses to your own real experiences
  • Keep your delivery natural and authentic

Do: Be Transparent, Especially in Technical Assessments

AI-generated coding answers or take-home assignment assistance is risky. Many companies use plagiarism detection and conduct live technical walkthroughs. They may even ask you to explain your logic in depth.

If you can’t confidently explain your solution, it will raise red flags.

It is acceptable to use AI to:

  • Clarify concepts
  • Debug learning exercises
  • Understand alternative approaches

But always ensure the final output reflects your own understanding.

Do: Strengthen Your LinkedIn Profile Strategically

AI can help:

  • Rewrite your LinkedIn headline
  • Improve your About section
  • Summarise technical projects

But authenticity matters.

In Ireland’s IT market, recruiters often:

  • Cross-reference CV and LinkedIn
  • Look at endorsements and activity
  • Review project consistency

Make sure everything aligns.

Don’t: Over-Automate Applications

It’s tempting to use AI to mass-apply to roles, but targeted applications outperform volume.

Instead:

  • Use AI to tailor each application
  • Customise your CV per role
  • Personalise outreach messages

Remember: AI Is a Tool — Not a Strategy

AI can improve presentation.  It cannot replace:

  • Industry insight
  • Market awareness
  • Salary benchmarking
  • Understanding hiring trends
  • Relationship-building with recruiters

That’s where experienced IT recruitment specialists add real value.

Be Smart, Safe, Strategic

Used correctly, AI can improve clarity, save time, enhance interview preparation and help increase confidence.

Used carelessly, it can damage credibility, expose confidential data and harm your professional reputation. The strongest candidates use AI as an assistant, not as a shortcut.
